Overview

Rameswaram is a holy town in Tamil Nadu, which is famous for being one of the Char Dham destinations according to Hindu mythology.  It is on Pamban Island, separated from the mainland of India by the Pamban channel and is about 40 kilometres from Mannar Island, Sri Lanka. The Ramanathaswamy Temple is the star attraction that welcomes tourists from all over the country. It is dedicated to the Hindu Lord Rama. The temple has a detailed interior and sacred water wells from which the pilgrims take the holy water and take a bath. Rameswaram has a strong history in Hindu mythology. The legend has it that Lord Rama constructed a bridge path from Rameswaram to Sri Lanka to rescue his wife, the goddess Sita, from the brahmin, Ravana. Other attractions include Dhanushkodi Beach – the southernmost tip of Rameswaram, Panchmukhi Hanuman Temple, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam House and Mannar Marine National Park. The tourists can shop for Kanjeevaram saris, marine seashells and accessories as souvenirs. Months of October to February are good to visit this sacred town.
