The Khajuraho Group of Monuments is a group of Hindu temples and Jain temples in Chhatarpur district, Madhya Pradesh, India, about 175 kilometres from Jhansi. They are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The temples are famous for their nagara-style architectural symbolism and their erotic sculptures. Most Khajuraho temples were built between 950 AD and 1050 AD by the Chandela dynasty. Historical records note that the Khajuraho temple site had 85 temples by the 12th century, spread over 20 square kilometres. Of these, only about 25 temples have survived, spread over six square kilometres. Of the surviving temples, the Kandariya Mahadeva Temple is decorated with a profusion of sculptures with intricate details, symbolism and expressiveness of ancient Indian art. These temples were built thousands of years ago by the Rajput Chandela King in a span of 100 years from 950 to 1050 AD. It is believed that Chandelas were followers of the tantric cult, which believes that gratification of earthly desires is the way to attain the divine. Though known for the eroticism depicted on the temple walls, it is only the western group of temples which have these sculptures.
Pick up from Khajuraho Railway Station/Airport and transfer to the hotel. The rest of the day is free for leisure and staying overnight. Kandariya Mahadev Temple: The grandest and tallest temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Lakshmana Temple: One of the oldest and most intact structures featuring a unique three-headed Vishnu idol. Chitragupta Temple: Dedicated to the Sun God, featuring magnificent relief carvings.
After breakfast, visit the Parsvanatha & Adinath Temples, beautiful Jain shrines in the Eastern Group with incredibly detailed sculptures. Dulhadev Temple: Part of the Southern Group, famous for its detailed masonry work. Chaturbhuj Temple: Notable for its massive, 9-foot-tall, four-armed idol of Lord Vishnu.
Wake up early (around 5:30 AM) and drive about 30 km to Madla Gate. Board an open-top gypsy safari into Panna National Park. Keep your eyes open for Royal Bengal Tigers, leopards, sloth bears, and various deer species. The Ken River flowing through the reserve adds stunning scenic vistas to the safari. Head to the breathtaking Raneh Falls, often described as the "Grand Canyon of India". The Ken River forms a 5-km-long, 100-foot-deep canyon made of pure crystalline granite in shades of pink, red, and grey. Right next to it is the sanctuary where you can catch a glimpse of endangered Gharials (Indian crocodiles). Check out, and proceed to the Khajuraho Airport or Railway Station for your onward journey.
