Kanatal, perched at an elevation of 8,500 feet above sea level is a small town situated in the Tehri Garhwal district in the state of Uttarakhand, India. Kanatal is 78 km from Dehradun (capital of the State Uttarakhand), 38 km from Mussoorie and 12 km from Chamba. It is on the Chamba-Mussoorie road and nearly 300 km from Delhi. The main attraction is the Surkanda Devi Temple that is one of the Shakti Peethas in India. Another tourist attraction is the Kodia Jungle that is located at a distance of one kilometre from the town. It acts as a gateway to the nearby places like Tehri, Chamba, Mussoorie and Dhanaulti. The best time to visit is in the months between April and September. It is a perfect gateway for the people who seek peace and want to unwind from the hustle-bustle of the city life.
Start your journey early from Dehradun (approx. 2–3 hours) or Delhi (approx. 8–9 hours). Wind through scenic roads lined with pine, oak, and rhododendron trees. Stop at the famous Dhanaulti Eco Park on your way to Kanatal. Pay a minor entry fee to walk along manicured pine forest trails and enjoy the fresh mountain air. Trek to Surkanda Devi Temple. Drive 11 km to Kaddukhal, the base point for the temple. Embark on a steep but rewarding 2.5 km trek up to the sacred shrine situated at 2,756 meters. Tip: If you prefer not to hike, a convenient ropeway service is available for around ₹200 - ₹300 per person. Take in the breathtaking 360-degree panoramic view of the snow-capped Himalayan peaks from the top. Head to the dense Kaudia Forest for a peaceful afternoon. Opt for a 4–5 km guided nature walk to spot local birds and small mammals. Alternatively, hire a local open-top 4x4 Gypsy safari to traverse the rugged forest tracks. Try out local thrills like zip-lining, valley crossing, or sky-cycling at a nearby adventure park. Return to your stay for an evening bonfire with light music under a clear, starlit mountain sky.
